Event Description
"Thanking Those Who Serve Us"
The 2014 Navy Birthday Ball will be celebrated by officers, enlisted, and civilians in a high class evening of fine dining and great company. The uniform for the event will be the equivalent of Dinner Dress White Jacket, Dinner Dress White, or Full Dress White for officers and enlisted and black tie attire for civilians and guests. U.S. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard will be our guest speaker for the evening.
U.S. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard
Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard has been the United States Representative for Hawaii's Second Congressional District since 2013 and she is also a Vice-Chair of the Democratic National Committee. She was the first voting American Samoan and Hindu member of the United States Congress. She was also one of the first female combat veterans in Congress.
Ms. Gabbard previously served on the Honolulu City Council and in the Hawaii House of Representatives. She was the youngest woman in the United States to be elected to a state legislature. She is currently a Military Police Company Commander with the Hawaii Army National Guard and has served on two deployments to the Middle East.
Timeline
Cocktail hour will begin at 6:00 p.m. and the formal ceremony will start at 7:00 followed by dinner, the guest speaker, a cake cutting ceremony, and dancing with D.J. Mike May of Resonance Sound.
Menu
For starters, a Big Island baby spinach salad will be served with Puna papaya, Brie, Maui strawberries, candied walnuts, and a raspberry vinaigrette. Afterwards, one of three main courses will be served.
Beef Option: Red wine, braised beef, short ribs with melted leeks, baby carrots, and a kabocha potato puree.
Chicken Option: Pan-roasted, free range, chicken breast with a soy caramel sauce, alii mushrooms, rosemary chicken jus, and a kabocha potato puree.
Vegetarian Option: Portobello mushroom ravioli with a melted tomato sauce, fava beans, and butternut squash.
Following completion of the main course, either a Konamisu (i.e., tiramisu made with Kona coffee) or a strawberry shortcake will be served. There will also be slices of ceremonial birthday cake for those who still have room for more.
Hotel Information
If you desire a room for the evening, the Sheraton may still have some available at the kamaʻāina rate. There are also several other lodging options available within walking distance including the Hale Koa.
Parking Information
Parking will be available, as well as valet service, at the Sheraton.
Child Care
If you would like child care, please notify your Command Navy Ball Representative. If there is sufficient demand, a provider will be arranged and your Command Representative will contact you.
Ticket Information
There is a 3% convenience fee to use the online transaction service that is included in the ticket price above. If you buy your ticket using cash or check through your Command Navy Ball Representative, the cost will be 3% cheaper per ticket.
This year, the committee decided to use paperless ticketing through Ticketbud to allow for a much simpler purchasing process and to save on printing costs. Using the online system will allow you to pay with a credit card or your bank account information. Receipts will be delivered to your email address and electronic tickets will be viewable by the Committee to make seating arrangements and check people in at the door. Again, anyone who doesn't want to use this system can still purchase tickets using cash or check through your Command Navy Ball Representative.
